GREETINGS FROM THE CHAPTER CHAIR
Hello! I hope that all of you are having a great summer and are doing something nice for yourselves. Don't stay in those "windowless" libraries all summer! I am very happy to be the Chair of MLA/SCC this year and aim to make it a good one for us all.
I'd like to congratulate the new Chapter officers elected at our Spring meeting-Debbie Smith (Music Librarian, Occidental College) as Vice Chair/Chair-Elect and Susan Annett (Head of Audiovisual Services, Santa Monica Public Library) as Secretary/Treasurer. The election was extremely close, indicating how difficult it was for us to choose among a slate of excellent candidates. I believe that I can speak for the entire Board in saying that we all very much look forward to working with Debbie and Susan! I would also like to thank our outgoing Board members Gloria Rogers (Secretary/Treasurer) and Kathy Glennan (Past Chair). They have both put in many hours of hard work for the Chapter (from rewriting the bylaws to managing the checking account) and deserve our heartiest thanks. We will miss them both.
Among items to consider for the near future is the Fall program! I will soon be looking for a Program Chair, so if any of you are interested, please let me know; otherwise, I will have to draft someone! At our last Board meeting, we discussed the idea of having a program centered around Japanese music and art, to be held perhaps jointly with ARLIS/SC at the Japan/America Center in downtown Los Angeles. If you have other ideas, please speak up!
Kathy Glennan has begun the initial steps of setting up a Gopher file on the Internet at USC to store MLA/SCC information, including a list of current officers, our newly revised bylaws, minutes of chapter business meetings, announcements of upcoming events, present and past issues of the newsletter, etc. If any of you have further ideas about other MLA/SCC data appropriate for storing in a Gopher file, please contact Kathy.
The Board has also been discussing the feasibility of publishing the proceedings and/or a recording from the Northern and Southern California Chapters' fiftieth anniversary celebration held in 1991. Since this was such a wonderful event, it seems a shame not to share some of its high points with others. If you have any thoughts (positive or negative) or are interested in helping out with this project, please contact Louise Spear, chair of the publications committee.
I would like to thank all of you in advance for your participation in MLA/SCC. I would encourage your involvement in aspects of the Chapter that are of interest to you by filling out the bottom half of the 1994/95 renewal form included with this issue of the Newsletter. We need help from everyone, and there is urgent need for a Newsletter coeditor.
Finally, I would like to thank Joe Fuchs for his work as Chair this past year. He did a terrific job despite some difficult personal situations. Lucky for us, we have him securely "trapped" on the Board for one more year!
Enjoy what's left of the summer, send in your chapter dues, and start thinking about Atlanta (a great town!) for 1995!

Let me take one final opportunity to express my thanks to the members of the Southern California Chapter for their support and hard work during my year as Chair. It has been an honor for me to hold this office and a pleasure to work with the two great Boards that we have had during the last two years. I look forward to serving you as Past Chair under Leslie and her excellent 1994/95 team. We have much to be proud of-I can't tell you the number of times over the past two years that I have heard praise and amazement from our colleagues around the country for the successes of the Chapter and its individual members. I salute officers Kathy Glennan, Leslie Anderson, Gloria Rogers, Louise Spear, and Blair Whittington, newsletter editor Darwin Scott, and spring program chair Don Brown for their exceptional achievements during 1993/94. CAL ARTS LIBRARY EARTHQUAKE REPORT
The Library at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia suffered considerable damage during the January 19 Northridge earthquake. Over 95 percent of the collection was thrown from the shelves, and the shelving for the reference collection and bound periodicals completely collapsed. Asbestos contamination, in addition to the random structural damage, forced the closure of the library and the sealing off of the section that included the main stacks, the reference collection, and the circulation and film services area. By the end of May, the asbestos decontamination was completed and structural repair well underway. The library remains closed and all its materials inaccessible until after the first of August. The Institute's Internet connection, which is part of the library computer center, was lost during the earthquake. So, for the time being, electronic access to Cal Arts is unavailable. Extensive damage was widespread on the Cal Arts campus, and classes have been held at temporary locations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley, including the Lockheed building, a Jewish temple, and some faculty homes. Two pianos were moved out of the building into the music librarian's living room, which has become the piano teaching studio!-Joan T. UCLA CANCELS BITNET ADDRESSES
As of July 1, 1994, UCLA ended its membership in the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking (CREN) due to financial considerations, dropping its CREN/Bitnet network connection and devoting its resources to Internet connectivity. From July 1, UCLA employees were no longer able to receive electronic mail or files from Bitnet sites addressed to UCLAMVS.BITNET. You need to change any email addresses to the UCLA campus ending with the Bitnet form UCLAMVS to the equivalent Internet form MVS.OAC.UCLA.EDU.
MEMBERS IN PRINT
Two of our USC-affiliated members appear in the March 1994 (50/3) issue of Notes. On pp. 1048-54 Charlotte Crockett's new column Interactive Multimedia and Software Reviews makes its inaugural appearance. Charlotte notes that "to reflect the technological advances made in the last four years, this column will now consist primarily of reviews, both of interactive multimedia products and of music software products." It supersedes Robert Skinner's semiannual Notes column that mostly listed new software while providing occasional reviews. On pp. 982-83 Stephen Davison reviews Elliott Antokoletz's Twentieth-Century Music (Englewood Cliffs: Prentice Hall, 1992).
The June 1994 issue of the ILWC Journal features several items by Jeannie Pool, including a synopsis of the Festival of Women Composers held at Cal Poly, Pomona in March 1994 (p. 31), a report on the meeting of the Women in Music Roundtable at the MLA meeting in Kansas City (p. 34), and a review (p. 37) entitled "Hildegard, Here Your Are, Now That We Need You!" of Nancy Fierro's inspirational booklet Hildegard of Bingen and Her Vision of the Feminine (Los Angeles: Carondelet Productions, 1994). Jeannie also reports on p. 35 that the collection of the International Institute for the Study of Women in Music, housed in the severely damaged Oviatt Library at California State University, Northridge, was neither harmed during the January 19 earthquake nor the flooding from the rains that followed.
Darwin Scott reviews Alma Colk Santosuosso's Paris, Bibliotheque nationale, fonds latin 7211: Analysis, Inventory, and Text (Ottawa: Institute of Mediaeval Music, 1991) in Notes 50/4 (June 1994): 1379-81.
The recent issue of the Cue Sheet (v. 10, no. 1-2 [1993/94]) features several articles and reviews by MLA/SCC members. Jeannie Pool records an interview with director Joshua Waletzky and composer David Raksin ("Music for the Movies: Bernard Herrmann," pp. 7-24); Stephen Fry's article "A Glossary of Film Music Terms" appears on pp. 25-30, followed by his review (pp. 31-34) of Steven C. Smith's A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1991); and Victor Cardell reviews Donald J. Stubblebine's Cinema Sheet Music: A Comprehensive Listing of Published Film Music from "Squaw Man" (1914) to "Batman" (1989) (Jefferson, N: McFarland, 1991) on pp. 34-36. The issue is under the editorship of Marsha Berman.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MUSICOLOGISTS SPEAK AT UC BERKELEY
The annual meeting of the Northern California and Pacific Southwest Chapters of the American Musicological Society convened at UC Berkeley on 23-24 April to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Northern Chapter. Participation from southern California was paltry, but note should be made of the following presentations: Alyson McLamore (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo): "'No Pains or Expense Will Be Spared . . .': Women Concert Organizers in 18th-Century London"; Patricia Hall (UC Santa Barbara): "Reconstructing a Sketchbook for Lulu"; and, Robert Stevenson (UCLA): "Nicholas Slonimsky: Centenarian Lexicographer and Musicologist," celebrating Slonimsky's 100th birthday on 27 April 1994.
MLA/SCC SPRING MEETING: MULTICULTURALISM & THE MUSIC COLLECTION
On 20 May 1994 members of the Southern California Chapter of the Music Library Association gathered at the Brand Art and Music Library in Glendale for a Spring meeting centered around the program Multiculturalism and the Music Collection. Designed by Don Brown and Leslie Andersen, the program ventured into uncharted waters by taking "a first stab" at documenting the frequent interactions and occasional collisions of multiculturalism and music collections, libraries, and librarians in the southern California area. This overview of varied experiences aimed to stimulate questions and to promote discussion about themes of prime importance to Southern California music librarians, and in this regard, the meeting was a success. If at the end of day members left in various states of exhaustion and frustration from the occasional lapses of focus and a lack of a consensus on what proved to be a difficult topic, in retrospect they should find satisfaction in the wealth of material laid before the music library community-certainly the groundwork for many future encounters with music and multiculturalism at both the local and national levels.
In lieu of a routine summation of the meeting, the editor has opted for a more extensive report that juxtaposes full texts, abridgments, abstracts, and summaries of the presentations in order to document the noteworthy observations, questions, and solutions offered by the speakers, and to provide those members unable to attend with a detailed synopsis of this important meeting. For those preferring an unedited account, a cassette recording of the entire program is available.
