LCDR TONY DEAVILLE is the winner of the 2004 Pac-10 Hoop-Pundits Pool by a single point over Shawna Nomura. Tony, who spent most of the season in the top-10, but never led, won in his first year in the contest. Shawna, a long time loyal contest entrant also finished a close second in 2000. Lance P, who had led after the Pac-10 tournament, missed every conference leader category (except national champ) and fell to 5th place.

Deaville, the third consecutive winner from UC Berkeley, is currently the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Center in Rochester, NY. That would make him the second furthest winner from the West coast. (The furthest being Bill Trenko, who won the first Hoop-Pundits contest in 1994 while residing in Australia.) He is looking forward to moving back to California this summer to be stationed on a carrier in San Diego.

His contest strategy: My strategy for this game was to pick about 3 to 5 teams that would do well and stick with them for most games. I picked some upsets for PAC-10 teams always beat each other up. And finally, I kept most of the games close since there is more parity in the PAC-10 than in most other conferences.

CONTEST FACTS AND FIGURES:

Four entrants had the most Conference Leader questions correct with five. To see how our picks compared with the actual category winners, go to Summary of Picks (down the page). The toughest categories turned out to be 10th place team, which nobody predicted and 3rd place team, where only Randy E had Arizona.
