Installing/Configuring Internet Explorer

We encourage users to regularly use an email client such as Outlook Express, Mozilla Mail, or Netscape Messenger to download their email to a local machine rather than only leaving the messages on the email server. This ensures that you have a backup copy on your machine.

To Install Internet Explorer 6:

  1. Double-click on the ie6.exe icon on your desktop. This will unzip the Internet Explorer installer.

  2. Select I accept the agreement after reading the License Agreement. Click on Next.

  3. You will see the Setup is initializing screen.

  4. Select Next.

  5. The installer will then proceed with Installing Components.

  6. After this is complete, you will be asked to restart your computer. Make sure to save all your other work. Click on Finish.


Configuring Outlook Express for E-Mail and News

  1. When you open up Outlook Express for the first time, this window should pop up. Type in your Full Name in the Display name field and then click on Next.

  2. Type in your Email Address in the E-Mail Address field and then click on Next.

  3. The Incoming mail server should already be set to mail.ucla.edu and the Outgoing mail server should already be set to mail.ucla.edu. Click on Next

  4. Type in your UCLA Logon ID in the Account name field (your UCLA Logon ID is the first part of your email address- everything before the "@ucla.edu"). We recommend that you uncheck the Remember password field. Click on Next.

  5. You have now finished setting up Outlook Express for email. Click Finish to begin setting up Outlook Express for newsgroups.

  6. Type in your full name in the Display name field. Click on Next.

  7. Type in your email address in the E-mail address field. Click on Next.

  8. The News (NNTP) server should already be set to news.ucla.edu. Click on Next.

  9. You have now finished the Outlook Express Wizard for email and newsgroups. Click on Finish and follow the remaining steps to complete setting up Outlook Express for both email and newsgroups.

  10. From the menu bar, select Tools then Accounts to bring up the Internet Accounts window.

  11. Click on the Mail tab in the Internet Accounts window. Select your BOL email account which is listed as mail.ucla.edu. Click on the Properties button the right.

  12. Click on the Servers tab in the Properties window. Make sure that the box for My server requires authentication is checked.



Configuring Outlook Express for SSL

  1. Click on the Advanced tab in the Properties window. For both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3), check the box that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Click OK.

  2. If you choose to set up the news account, click on the News tab in the Internet Accounts window. Select your BOL news account, which is news.ucla.edu. Click on the Properties button on the right.

  3. Click on the Advanced tab in the Properties window. For News (NNTP), check the box that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Click OK.

  4. You have now finished configuring Outlook Express.
