How to Use Eudora 6.x

This page will show you how to perform the basic functions of Eudora 6.x, including how to check, read, reply, forward, and delete your mail.

Note that you must connect to the internet to send and receive mail; everything else may be done off-line.

Sharing Eudora

To enable more than one person to use Eudora on the same computer, you must create a separate directory on your hard drive in which to store each user's e-mail along with a separate Eudora icon and preferences file for each user.

These instructions assume that you have installed the Bruin OnLine software into the default drive and directory, c:\Program Files\Qualcomm.

Creating a new e-mail directory

  1. From the desktop, open My Computer (or the computer icon, if you have renamed it).
  2. Open the C: drive (or the drive that you have Eudora installed on).
  3. Open the folder Program Files\Qualcomm
  4. From the "File" menu select New Folder. A new folder will be created. Rename the folder to the name of the person who will be using this new email setup (i.e. "jbruin").

Creating a new Eudora icon

  1. Click the right mouse button on the Start button. Select Open. This will open the folder containing the Start menu shortcuts. (note: if you are using WinNT or Win2000, you may need to go to the start menu folder for All Users)
  2. Open the Programs Folder, then open the Eudora folder.
  3. Right click (click once with the right mouse button) on the Eudora icon. Select Create Shortcut. A copy of the icon will be created.
  4. Rename the new icon to Eudora-XXXXwhere XXXX is the name of the person who will be using this Eudora profile (i.e. "jbruin").
  5. Right-click on the new copy of the Eudora icon and select Properties.
  6. Click on the Shortcut tab.
  7. In the "Target" field, type the following: "C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe" "C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\XXXX" (Note: this should all appear on one line and must contain the quotes) Again, XXXX should be replaced by the name of the directory you created (i.e. "jbruin").
  8. In the "Start In" field, type the following: C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\XXXX, where XXXX should be replaced by the name of the directory you created (i.e. "jbruin").
  9. Click on OK.

Creating a new preferences file

  1. From the "Start" menu, select Programs, then Eudora, then the new Eudora shortcut. This will run Eudora using the new profile. The "New Account Wizard" will come up automatically. You will need to configure it for the person using it. Click on Next.
  2. Select Create a new e-mail account and then click on Next.
  3. Type in the user's real name and click on Next.
  4. Enter the user's email address in the form of XXXX@ucla.edu where XXXX is the person's UCLA Logon ID (i.e. "jbruin@ucla.edu"). Make sure it is typed in all lowercase. Click on Next.
  5. Verify that the user's Bruin OnLine username is in the field and in all lowercase. Click on Next.
  6. In the "Incoming Mail Server" field, mail.ucla.edu should already be there. If not, enter it in. Verify that POP is selected, and click on Next.
  7. For the "Outgoing Mail Server", mail.ucla.edu should already be there. If not, enter it in. Click on Next. Click on Finish.

You are now done setting up Eudora for a second BOL account.
