Installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows XP/Vista

NOTE: Although the screen shots are of a Windows Vista installation, the installation process is the same for both Vista and XP.

Before you begin, please make sure that you have already uninstalled any previous anti-virus program (such as Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee Virus Scan, etc.) from your computer.

  1. Please ensure that you have downloaded the ESXP.exe installation file to your desktop. Please be sure that you have saved any open documents and exited out of any other applications before continuing.
  2. To start the installer, please double-click on the ESXP.exe icon on the desktop.

  4. After you have sucessfully installed Sophos, you should have an icon in your system tray that looks like this:

    Vista System Tray

To verify that the installation is updating to the most current build of Sophos and virus definition files, please right-click the Sophos icon and select View updating status. You should then see a progress window:

    update progress

NOTE: If you see the Sophos shield icon with a red circle on top of it xp_icon_bad.png or the icon is still gray after updating, your installation was not successful. Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet and try to update the application again by right-clicking the icon and selecting Update Now.

  5. If you have any problems with Sophos installation, configuration, or updating, please contact the BOL Help Desk at (310) 267-HELP (4357), option 1, or by emailing consult@ucla.edu.
