Configuring the PPP/Remote Access Control Panel

These steps show how to connect to the Bruin OnLine Regular Modem Pool (4 hour time limit with a 20 minute idle time limit).

The BOL Modem Pool has a 4 hour time limit, though if there is no network activity for 20 minutes, you will be disconnected. It currently supports only the V.90 protocol for high speed connections. Note that you will need a 56K modem in order to make use of this feature. If you do not have one, the highest speed you will be able to connect at is 33.6K.

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels. Open the PPP control Panel.
  2. From the File menu, select Configurations.
  3. Highlight the item Default and click the Duplicate button.

  4. Name the file UCLA BOL and click the OK button.

  5. Highlight the item UCLA BOL and click the Make Active button.

  6. The button next to Registered User should be selected.

  7. Type your UCLA Logon ID in the Name field and your password in the Password field. Note: your UCLA Logon ID is the first part of your UCLA email address, everything before the @ucla.edu.

  8. Enter the BOL Modem Pool phone number:
    • 1-310-206-8311 4 hours access with a 20 minute idle time limit
    If you need a dialing prefix, enter it here (i.e., 9, *70, *1170, etc.)

  9. Click the Options... button.
  10. Click the Protocol tab. Check the following boxes and buttons:
    • Allow error Correction and compression in modem.
    • Use TCP header compression.

  11. Verify that the Connect to a command-line host box is not checked.
  12. Click the Connection tab. Only the Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications box should be checked.

  13. Click the Redialing tab. From the Redial pull-down menu select Redial Main Number Only.

  14. Enter the Maximum number of redial attempts that you want.

  15. Click the OK button. Close the PPP control Panel and click the Save button when prompted.

Connecting to Bruin OnLine

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels. Open the PPP control panel.
  2. Click on the Connect button.

  3. Your modem will now attempt to dial up to the Bruin OnLine system. If the connection is successful, you should see the PPP window with a disconnect button.

  4. You can click the Disconnect button when you are done with your online session.
