UCLA Wireless Network Access
Wireless internet access is available in select locations on campus for users with an eligible UCLA Logon ID and their own 802.11b compliant wireless network interface card.
Getting Started:
1. Requirements for using the Wireless Network.
In order to access the network, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- a valid individual UCLA Logon ID.
- a wireless card that is 802.11b compliant.
- a Windows (98/ME/2000/XP/Vista) notebook
OR
a Macintosh 10.x notebook computer.
Optional: Users requiring a secure connection may connect via a VPN client. BOL offers the Cisco 3030 VPN client for those who need it. If your department provides its own VPN service, you can use it in place of the UCLA VPN services. You can utilize the wireless network without the UCLA VPN service with following protocols: SSH, PPTP, IPSec, L2TP.
2. Configure your card to use the Wireless Network.
Note: These instructions can differ substantially depending on the manufacturer of your wireless card. The instructions provided are only given as a general guideline.
- Make sure you are within the Wireless coverage area. A map is available

Look for the UCLA Wireless signs near coverage areas:
- You will need to configure your SSID, sometimes called Network Name to UCLAWLAN. This entry is case-sensitive so this entire entry must be in all capital letters. This setting is typically found in the wireless card configuration client for your card. You will need to refer to the instructions provided with your wireless card for the exact location of this setting.
- The UCLA Wireless Network does not use WEP, or Wired Equivalency Privacy, due to insecurities in the protocol. Disable WEP in your wireless card configuration client. This is sometimes referred to as the Wireless Network Password.
- When in the coverage area, if you are able to successfully associate with the UCLAWLAN network and obtain an IP address, then continue with the next step. If not, consult your card's instructions.
- Launch a web browser. You should be presented with the wireless portal authentication page. Use your UCLA Logon ID and password to authenticate. Please configure your browser to allow popups from https://portal.auth.ucla.edu as the logout mechanism is via the browser.

Using a VPN Client
Because UCLA uses a federated model for its wireless network, some locations may require the use of a VPN client to connect to the network. See the link below for downloading information.
Once you have configured your wireless network card to associate with the UCLA Wireless Network, you should be able to authenticate to the VPN service. After authenticating, you should be able to access the internet.
