How much space do I have for my files?
Your disk quota on the Bruin OnLine web server is 50MB, which will hold a fairly large website.
-
What will my URL look like?
Any page you store on the Bruin OnLine web server will be accessible at http://UCLA Logon ID.bol.ucla.edu/nameofpage.html, where UCLA Logon ID is your UCLA Logon ID, and nameofpage.html is the file name of the page. Make sure that all your HTML file names end with the .html extension. The name of your home page (the main page in your website) should be index.html. The URL for your home page will be http://UCLA Logon ID.bol.ucla.edu//, where UCLA Logon ID is your UCLA Logon ID.
-
Will my page be found by search engines?
Your page may be listed with several of the major search engines, though it will not automatically be done so. The search engines work by doing what is known as "crawling," where they will follow links on other web pages, indexing as they go. You can have your web page added to a particular collection by going to one of the appropriate "Add-A-Link" pages at Yahoo, AltaVista, and InfoSeek.
-
How do I upload files to the server?
You may use the File Manager in Bruin OnLine's webmail application at https://mail.ucla.edu or an FTP client which supports SSL connections. Bruin OnLine supports CuteFTP, which is available for either Windows or Macintosh computers. You will need to connect to the server www.bol.ucla.edu. For more information, see Upload Files to the Server.
-
Do all the pages I create have to exist in a single directory?
You may create subdirectories within your own directory on the Bruin OnLine web server using an FTP client or the File Manager in Bruin OnLine's webmail application at https://mail.ucla.edu.
-
How do I delete pages I don't want anymore?
You may delete old files within your own directory on the Bruin OnLine web server using an FTP client or the File Manager in Bruin OnLine's webmail application at https://mail.ucla.edu.
-
How can I restrict access to my website?
You may password-protect all (or portions) of your website by setting up web directory protection. For more information, see Web Directory Protection.
-
