UCLA Usenet News Server

Usenet is a distributed worldwide discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically based upon subject. Articles (or messages) are "posted" to these newsgroups by people connecting to a Usenet News server with the appropriate software. These articles are then broadcast to other interconnected Usenet News servers. This creates a network of sites which share common forums.

Newsgroup hierarchies available on news.ucla.edu include the ucla.* hierarchy, which is dedicated to issues specific to the UCLA campus, and is not transmitted outside of UCLA

Requesting a Newsgroup under the ucla.* hierarchy

UCLA faculty, staff, and students can request the creation of newsgroups under the ucla.* hierarchy. The newsgroup must be academic in nature, or pertain to official University business. To create a newsgroup, one must be a faculty, staff member or student, and have a valid UCLA Logon ID. Creation of newsgroups under ucla.class.* must be requested by the instructor of that class.

If you are interested in creating a newsgroup, we ask that you first check if the newsgroup of your purpose has already been created under another name or hierarchy. Also, please visit the following page to determine if a mailing list is more appropriate for your purpose:

To request the creation of a newsgroup under the ucla.* heirarchy, please fill out the online form at:

Please realize that newsgroups that fall under the ucla.* hierarchy are only available to UCLA community and will not be carried upstream to other news servers for the general public.

All newsgroups must be used for legal purposes and must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
