All Bruin OnLine email accounts include a @ucla.edu email account. Your Bruin OnLine email account will be in the format:
jbruin@ucla.eduwhere jbruin refers to the UCLA Logon ID and ucla.edu is the name of UCLA's mail server. Your BOL email account is separate from any departmental email accounts you may have (i.e.. humnet, mednet). In order to receive mail, the server must authenticate with the user's password. You MUST use your BOL password to check your BOL email. Some email programs save the user's password so that they do not have to reenter it every time they check their email.
Using BOL Webmail
You can use Bruin OnLine Webmail to check your mail remotely from any computer that has a browser and internet access. Please try checking your mail at:
Using an Email Client
You can use an email client (Mozilla Mail, Eudora, Outlook Express, etc.) on your computer to check your Bruin OnLine email. This is the preferred way to check your mail since you are able to download mail locally to your computer, and keep a backup on your machine.
You can download an email client from our software pages at:
Bruin OnLine Email Servers
In order to send email, Bruin Online uses the SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol using port 25. The SMTP protocol sends your email and any attachments to the the email address specified in the message. If you send a message to an invalid email address, then it will be sent back to you with an error message in the body of the text.
Here are the specifications for BOL's mail server:
- Incoming Mail Server: (POP/IMAP) mail.ucla.edu SSL Encryption REQUIRED
- Outgoing Mail Server: (SMTP) mail.ucla.edu SSL Encryption REQUIRED
Using An Outside Internet Service Provider(ISP)
This applies to BOL users who do not use the BOL modem pools or on campus LAN connections to access the internet (includes users with DSL and Cable modem connections). Most ISPs restrict their users to using their SMTP server for security and anti-spam reasons. Your BOL email may be sent using any SMTP server (depending on your ISP) and will still show up as UCLA email. If you use an outside ISP and only have problems with sending BOL email, then you may have to use that ISP's SMTP server to send your mail. Contact their support center in order to find out their SMTP information.
Email Services
Bruin Online offers the following services connected with your email account:
SPAM Identification: All messages addressed to "recipient@ucla.edu" as well as mail sent via mail.ucla.edu will be scanned and given a spam score. This score is inserted into the header of the email message. Users are then able to set up filters, and filter according to this added header.
Virus Notification Service: All Bruin OnLine users are protected against viruses for all of their incoming @ucla.edu emails. Anyone who is using mail.ucla.edu as the outgoing (SMTP) server will have all of their outgoing emails scanned for viruses. If an email message is found to be infected, the SMTP gateway will refuse to accept the email message, causing the remote system to generate a bounce. Non-infected messages will be delivered normally.
Server-side Filtering: Server-side filtering allows you to apply filtering rules on your mailbox on the server before you download it to your email program. This type of filtering is beneficial since you will not need to spend time downloading all of the unwanted mail, and then filtering them out in your email program. Server-side Filtering also allows you to set a Vacation Notification as well as set up Forwarding for your account.
