Dialing into Bruin OnLine
If you have your own computer and modem, you may be able to dial into the Bruin OnLine modem pool and obtain Internet access from home. Currently, the BOL modem pool is local to the UCLA area. UCLA does not charge any fees for using the modem pools, but your telephone company may bill you for the calls if they are not local.
| Modem Pool Number | Number of Modems | Modem Protocol |
| (310) 206-8311 | 1824 | V.90 modems |
The Regular Modem Pool has a 20 minute idle timeout. The modem pool supports the V.34 protocol for 33.6 kbps connections and the V.90 protocol for higher speeds.
If you have a Macintosh, you will need System Software 7.5 or higher and a dialer. System 7.6 and above comes with a built-in dialer called OT/PPP (or Remote Access). Users can also download and use FreePPP as the dialer. For download and configuration instructions, see the Bruin OnLine Software page.
If you have a PC with Windows 95/98/NT, you can use the built-in networking software. You will need to configure your machine and create dial-up profiles for Dial-Up Networking. For instructions on how to do this, see the Bruin OnLine FAQ page.
Using an outside ISP
If you have signed up for your own ISP and have Internet access, you can use your existing connection. You will still be able to retrieve your Bruin OnLine email - just configure your email client with the BOL POP mail server - mail.ucla.edu. You should set your SMTP server to the one provided by your ISP. If you would like to access UCLA restricted resources, such as the library databases or the Bruin OnLine software updaters, you will need to configure your computer to use the BOL Proxy Server.
On-Campus Housing
If you have a computer and are living in on-campus housing, you can use the ethernet ports in your room to connect to the Internet. For more information, contact the Student Technology Center.
On-Campus Computer Labs
You can use one of several labs on campus to access your Bruin OnLine account. To use these labs, you will need to login with your Bruin OnLine username and password. If you carry a 3.5" floppy disk or ZIP disk to the lab, you can use it to save your preferences and email.
