Lifetime Email Forwarding FAQ

Lifetime Email Forwarding

  • What is the Lifetime Email Forwarding service?

Lifetime Email Forwarding is a way for you to show your Bruin pride by keeping your @ucla.edu address. Lifetime Email Forwarding is not an actual email account; rather it points to an existing non-BOL email account, forwarding emails sent to your @ucla.edu address directly to the external account. With Lifetime Email Forwarding, you can keep the same @ucla.edu address you've had for years, even if you switch email accounts, email providers or change email addresses at work. By using your @ucla.edu address, you don't have to update your friends when you make a change in your email account.

  • I'm graduating soon or have graduated within the last year. How do I sign up?

If you are about to graduate, you should know that your BOL account will be deactivated approximately 6-8 weeks after the quarter ends. However, you can keep your @ucla.edu address forever by using the Lifetime Email Forwarding service. Simply point your address to an existing non-BOL email account; new emails will start forwarding to your email account automatically. To do so, simply log in, provide the email account to which you would like to forward emails and then select Apply When My Account is Deactivated upon confirming the forwarding address.

  • I'm a graduate who is no longer enrolled or employed at UCLA. How do I sign up?

If you are an alumnus who recently ended your enrollment or employment at UCLA, you are free to set up your lifetime forwarding address now. Simply log in, provide the email account to which you would like to forward emails and then select Apply Immediately upon confirming the forwarding address.

NOTE: If you still have an active BOL email account, before you set up forwarding, we highly recommend that you log in to your account one final time and download or back up your email, folders, and address books. After you have activated the Lifetime Email Forwarding service, your BOL email account will be deactivated. Information on backing up your data is here.

If you do not remember your BOL user name or password, use the tools below:

If you have any questions or are having trouble logging in, please contact us at (310) 267-HELP (4357), option 1, or at consult@ucla.edu.

  • Can I filter spam with this forwarding service?

Not directly. However, BOL's servers will still run any messages addressed to your @ucla.edu address through our spam identification service. Using an heuristic rule base, this service tags incoming mail with a spam score and places this information in the mail headers before forwarding the message to your external account.

By using filtering rules available in many email clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Mac Mail, users can tailor specific actions to perform on mail tagged as spam. Initially, we suggest you filter suspected spam into a separate folder. In the future, you may wish to delete spam immediately.

Read about spam identification and filtering for your specific email client here.

  • Can I send email from my @ucla.edu address using the forwarding service?

Most email programs allow you to set up your account so that mail appears to originate from a different address then the one you are actually using. If you would like your mail to appear as if it is originating from your @ucla.edu address instead of from your external account, you need to modify this option in your email client. In most programs, the options that should be changed are Email Address and Reply-to. Each email client program is somewhat different in where these options exist. This option is also available in GMail's webmail as well. You'll want to set up an account within your email client where these options reflect your @ucla.edu address.

  • How is this service different from a BOL mail forwarding filter?

With a BOL mail filter, emails that are sent to your BOL account are then forwarded to external non-BOL email accounts via the mail rules that are associated with your BOL account. However, with Lifetime Email Forwarding, you do not have a BOL account to hold these rules; rather emails are directly forwarded to your external non-BOL account following their receipt by the UCLA mail servers.
