BOL Services and the iPhone

The Bruin OnLine Help Desk has been testing iPhone functionality with Bruin OnLine services, and this document will provide a quick guide to configuring your iPhone to take advantage of those services, specifically email and wireless access.

BOL E-Mail Accounts and the iPhone

Bruin OnLine recommends using IMAP as your email protocol, especially when accessing your account from multiple devices, such as from your desktop computer and from your iPhone. The following instructions will enable you to configure your iPhone to access your Bruin OnLine email account.

For illustrative purposes, we will assume a Bruin Online account holder with the following information:

  • Name: Joe Bruin
  • UCLA Logon ID: jbruin
  • Bruin OnLine Alias joe.bruin
  • Password: XYZ1234

Please be sure and substitute your account information when configuring your iPhone

  1. From the Home window, select Settings > Mail > Add Account... > Other
  2. Select the IMAP button at the top.
  3. NOTE: DO NOT USE POP with your iPhone. All emails will be downloaded to the phone. Use IMAP.

  4. Name: Name you want to appear on outgoing emails.
    For example: Joe Bruin.
  5. Address: You can specify this with or without your account alias, if you have set one up.
    For example: jbruin@ucla.edu or joe.bruin@ucla.edu.
  6. Description: Defaults to the email address. We recommend leaving it this way to avoid confusion, especially if you are accessing multiple accounts.
    For example: jbruin@ucla.edu or joe.bruin@ucla.edu.
  7. Incoming Mail Server

    • Host Name: mail.ucla.edu
    • User Name: your UCLA Logon ID. For example: jbruin
    • Password: your UCLA Logon ID password. For example: XYZ1234
  8. Outgoing Mail Server

    • Host Name: mail.ucla.edu
    • User Name: your UCLA Logon ID. For example: jbruin
    • Password: your UCLA Logon ID password. For example: XYZ1234
  9. Advanced:

    • Incoming Uses SSL: On
    • Outgoing Uses SSL: On
    • Authentication: Password

Authenticating on the UCLA Wireless Network with the iPhone

Authenticating your iPhone on the UCLA Wireless Network is a two step process:

  1. Connect with a UCLA Wireless Network Access Point (AP).
  2. Establish a PPTP Connection

Step 1: Connect with a UCLA Wireless Network Access Point:

  1. From the Home window, select Settings > Wi-Fi
  2. Wi-Fi: On
  3. Choose a Network: UCLAWLAN

Depending on your location, you may be connecting to a Departmental AP, and not a CTS managed AP. While many of these access points are named UCLAWLAN, access to them may be limited by department policy. If you are having trouble connecting with departmental access points, please contact the department responsible for supporting that access point.

For more information on coverage areas, please see:
http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage/

Step 2: Establish a PPTP connection:

Again, please be sure and substitute your account information when configuring your iPhone

  1. From the Home window, select Settings and set VPN to the ON position.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings > General > Network > VPN > Settings.
  3. Make sure that PPTP is selected and configure PPTP as follows:

    • Server: pptp.vpn.ucla.edu
    • User Name: your UCLA Logon ID. For example: jbruin
    • Password: your UCLA Logon ID password. For example: XYZ1234
    • Encryption Level: Auto
    • Proxy: Off

You are now authenticated with the network, and will be able to access all of the iPhone services using the UCLA Wireless Network. The iPhone will remember the UCLAWLAN access point and PPTP information entered and will attempt to reconnect with it each time you return to the UCLA Wireless Network.

Troubleshooting Connections

Once again, if you are having trouble authenticating with the UCLA Wireless Network, please see our Wireless Coverage Map at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage/ and make sure that you are not trying to connect with a Departmental Access Point.

If, after reviewing this document and verifying that your configuration information is correct, you are still experiencing problems connecting to and authenticating with the UCLAWLAN, please contact the BOL HelpDesk at (310) 267-HELP (4357) option 1.
