UCLA Logon ID and BOL Services Information

  • Who is eligible for access to BOL services?

Anyone actively affiliated with UCLA is eligible for access to BOL services. Current students (grad and undergrad), faculty, and staff members on the UCLA payroll are eligible for access. Visiting scholars are also eligible for access, but will need to follow special procedures to obtain a UCLA Logon ID and access to BOL services. UCLA alumni and extension students (except for concurrent enrollment) are not eligible for access to BOL services. For more information regarding service eligibility, please go to http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/accounts/info/.

  • What is a UCLA Logon ID?

The UCLA Logon ID is your campus online identifier. It is used for authentication to most online services on campus and is the first step in the campus' attempt to migrate all systems to a "single sign-on". It also provides eligible users with access to BOL services such as an e-mail account, network access, web hosting service, etc. Previously, the UCLA Logon ID was called a Bruin OnLine ID or BOLid or BOL username.

  • What information do I need to create a UCLA Logon ID?

You will need three pieces of information to create a UCLA Logon ID:

    1. Your last name
    2. Your date of birth
    3. Your 9-digit University ID number (for students, it will be your 9-digit applicant/student ID number; for faculty and staff, it will be your 9-digit employee number, which can be found on your pay-stub)

If you do not have this information because you are not affiliated with UCLA as an applicant/student or staff or faculty member, you are probably not eligible for a UCLA Logon ID or BOL services.

  • How can I create a UCLA Logon ID?

    Visit https://logon.ucla.edu/.

  • What happens to my access to services after I leave UCLA?

After your affiliation with UCLA ends, your BOL email account will be closed and you will lose access to all BOL services. You will receive a warning via e-mail that your eligibility has ended with sufficient notice for you to make alternate arrangements for services.

    • Graduates of UCLA may keep their @ucla.edu address via the lifetime email forwarding mechanism. Information on lifetime forwarding is available here:

      http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/accounts/lifetime/

    • Faculty and Staff - your access to BOL services will be terminated after leaving UCLA. You will receive an e-mail message notifying you of the deactivation date.

    • "Special"-class users - access for special-class users ends on the expiration date established when services were provisioned. You will receive an e-mail message at the beginning of the month in which your access expires.
  • Can I change my UCLA Logon ID?

No. UCLA Logon IDs are permanently tied to your 9-digit identifying number. If you are are not satisfied with the UCLA Logon ID you chose, you are free to set up an alias to use for email purposes. Information on aliases is available at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/accounts/alias/.

  • How can I change my UCLA Logon ID password?

To change your UCLA Logon ID password, visit https://logon.ucla.edu/. Any changes that you make in the software clients used for Bruin OnLine (Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Mac Mail, etc.), will not change your password on the server.

  • What do I do if I have forgotten my UCLA Logon ID password?

You can reset your UCLA Logon ID password by visiting https://logon.ucla.edu/

If you are unable to reset your password using the password reset tool, please contact the Bruin OnLine Help Desk located at Kerckhoff Hall, Suite 124. You may need to visit the office with a photo ID.

If you are a "special"-class user of BOL services, visit the "special"-class user information page.

  • How can I forward my e-mail?

You can forward your incoming BOL e-mail to a maximum of 3 e-mail accounts. Visit the Setting Up Forwarding page to learn more about this service and how to establish mail forwarding.

  • What is the vacation feature and how can I use it?

The vacation feature will send an automated response to anyone who e-mails you while you are away on vacation. This automated response will notify them that you are away for an extended period of time (which you define), thereby accounting for any delays in response time. Visit the Setting up an Vacation Notification/Auto-Reply page and follow the instructions in order to set up this feature.

  • What quotas do I have with my BOL account?

Your BOL e-mail account has a hard quota of 75MB. What this means is that you can only store a maximum of 75MB on the BOL e-mail server. After you reach the 75MB hard quota, all new e-mail will be bounced back to the sender. The maximum individual message size one can send is 10MB. You will not be able to send any messages that exceed 10MB in size. Because attachments are sometimes converted to a format specifically for transfer over email, the size of your overall email may increase 15-20% beyond its original size. This means that you may not be able to send attachments that are close to 10MB in size.

Your BOL e-mail account also provides you with a 50MB quota on the BOL Personal Web Page server that allows you to store and publish a web page.

To check your BOL account e-mail quota, login to webmail and view your quota usage monitor across the top of the message listing window.

  • Can I extend any of my BOL quotas?

No, it is not possible to extend any of the quotas on the BOL server.
