Dial-up Troubleshooting

  • I get error 691 when trying to connect to BOL using Windows.

Error 691 occurs when the User name and Password are invalid. Make certain that you are typing the correct information. The User name is the part of your E-mail address before the @ucla.edu. It needs to be typed in lower case letters. The Password must be typed correctly. It is case sensitive, so make certain that your Caps Lock key is not turned on. If you have forgotten your password, you can find out what to do by checking the Accounts FAQ.

  • Netscape or Internet Explorer says no DNS when I try and look at a Web page.

Make certain that your connection settings are correct. Click here to find out how to verify your connection settings.

  • Someone is using a Bruin Online email account for malicious activities. What should I do?

If someone is abusing their Bruin Online email account (or yours), you can report it to abuse@ucla.edu . Possible abuse situations:

    • Someone has obtained your password and is using your email account.
    • Someone is sending you spam (unsolicited E-mail) from their Bruin Online email account.
    • Any violations of the Acceptable Use Policy.
  • I get connected through a dial-up connect but none of the Internet programs work. What can I do?

One thing you can check is that your TCP/IP settings are configured correctly. For more information on how to check your TCP/IP settings, click www.bol.ucla.edu/help/faq/settings.html. If you are running Mac Classic OS please see www.bol.ucla.edu/software/mac/tcpip for more information. If the problem persists, please call the Bruin OnLine Help Desk at (310) 267-HELP (4357), option #1.

  • Why don't I get faster 56K connection speeds?

First of all, you need to make certain that your modem conforms to the V.90 protocol for 56K speeds. Make certain that you are using the latest V.90 driver and modem firmware. The BOL Help Desk can assist you in identifying your modem model and pointing you to the correct software.

The FCC limits legal speed on the telephone network to 53Kbps. Actual speeds vary according to your telephone line conditions. With a reasonably good telephone line and presupposing that you reside within 3 1/2 miles of the central office (local telephone company building), you should get connection speeds between 40K and 53K.
