Backup E-mails Using Thunderbird

These instructions will guide you through configuring Thunderbird to backup your e-mails. Please note that these instructions assume that this is your first time using Thunderbird. If you already have Thunderbird setup for IMAP access, please skip to step 8.


  1. The first time you open up Thunderbird, you will be presented with the New Account Setup wizard. Select Email Account and then click Next.

  2. Enter your full name into the Your Name field and you Bruin OnLine email address into the Email Address field, then click Next.

  3. Select the button next to IMAP and type in mail.ucla.edu for both the incoming and the outgoing mail server, then click Next.

  4. Enter your UCLA Logon ID in the User Name field then click Next.

  5. Enter your account name in the Account Name field then click Next.

  6. You have completed the Thunderbird Account Wizard. Click Finish to close the set up wizard.
  7. Click Tools in the menu bar and select Account Settings. Select Server Settings and enable the Use secure connection (SSL) option in the server settings field.

  8. Select Offline & Disk Space from the menu options on the left. Click the button that says Select folders for offline use.

  9. Check the Download checkbox next to the folders you want to back up. If you are unsure which folders you want to back up, Bruin OnLine recommends that you select all of them. Click the OK button. Click the OK button again to be returned to the main application window.

  10. From the File menu select Offline and Download/Sync Now to synchronize your folders and download all of your mail.
  11. In the following prompt check the boxes for Mail messages and Work offline once download and/or sync is complete and hit the OK button.
  12. Thunderbird should now start downloading your messages to your local computer and take you offline. You can verify that your messages have been downloaded/synced by clicking on them while in offline mode.
