07/31/98: Bruin OnLine Modem Pools
The Bruin OnLine modem pools have been upgraded to allow usage of the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) for login verification purposes. This allows direct login as part of the PPP negotiation, rather than requiring the use of a specialized script or a terminal window.
Unfortunately, the update has changed the scripted login procedure. If you are having dialup problems, where your connection attempt appears to be timing out, we suggest that you set up your connection to use PAP, rather than a script. Instructions for enabling PAP are available below for Windows 95/98, Windows NT, and Macintoshes with Open Transport/PPP.
If you must use a script to dial up and you do not have PAP capabilities, you must add a command to send a carriage return character and then wait for 1 to 2 seconds, before attempting to login. If you use a terminal window style login, you must manually press the enter key.
With Windows 95 (OSR2 or with Dial-Up Networking version 1.2), or Windows 98, you will need to edit the properties of each dial-up icon. Right click on the appropriate icons and select Properties from the pop-up menu. Click on the Scripting tab. Erase any script listed in the appropriate box. Click on OK when you have finished. You should do this for each of your Bruin OnLine connections.
With older versions of Windows 95 (prior to OSR2, or without the Dial-Up Networking 1.2 update), you will need to use the "Make New Connection" wizard (located in My Computer, then Dial-Up Networking) to create a new PAP enabled profile. When asked for the telephone number to use, enter 246-1373 (for access to the expanded modem pool), 206-8311 (for access to the regular pool), or 825-9944 (for access to the express modem pool). Create one icon for each pool. You will also need to select a "name" for each icon.
With Windows NT, you will need to open up Dial-Up Networking, click on the More button and select "Edit entry & modem properties". Select the Server tab. Ensure that Enable PPP LCP extensions is selected. Select the Script tab and then select the radio button marked None. Select the Security tab and select the radio button "Accept and authentication including clean text". Click on OK. You should do this for each of your Bruin OnLine profiles.
With Open Transport/PPP, you can continue to use your current profile. Open up the PPP Control Panel and select the appropriate dial-up profile. Click on the Configure button at the bottom of the screen, then the Protocol tab. Make sure that the option to "Connect to a command line host" is not selected. Then click on OK. Connect by clicking on the Connect button. Follow these steps for each of your Bruin OnLine profiles.
More complete instructions will be posted shortly, with a pointer available from this site.
