01/07/98: BOL Email System Down Saturday, 1/10/98
Hello,
The BOL (Ben2) email system will be unavailable beginning at 07:30 am on Saturday, January 10th. The system must remain down until the necessary work is completed - this is estimated to be from 8 to 12 hours. The purpose of this outage is to allow us to move and reconfigure about 50 gigabytes worth of files. This is part of the ongoing Ben2 system upgrade. We have scheduled this outage for Saturday instead of the more usual Sunday to allow us an extra day for recovery should we encounter an unexpected problem.
Services which will be unavailable include Eudora (POP) and travelers' email (Pine). No mail will be lost; incoming mail will be queued and processed when the system is brought back up. Mail directed to users using BOL mail forwarding (e.g., someone using the address joe@ucla.edu to forward to joe@my_department.ucla.edu) will also be held until BOL services return.
Access to Orion via BOL will be unavailable, but Orion services in the Libraries themselves will be available. The BOL web server will remain up, as will the SMTP gateway used by some departmental mail systems.
We understand that long outages like this are an inconvenience, and we will continue to attempt to limit down time to our usual early Sunday morning schedule whenever possible. Unfortunately, there just isn't any way to break this particular outage into shorter pieces.
