1/19/2006: Mail Server Cluster IP Address Change

At 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 19th, Bruin OnLine added additional servers to the mail.ucla.edu cluster. This was done to improve the performance of BOL mail services. The addition of the new servers resulted in the IP address of all of the servers in the cluster changing.

Due to the change of IP addresses in the mail.ucla.edu cluster, some users may experience problems connecting to mail.ucla.edu, either via webmail or an email client. The easiest way to resolve this problem is to restart your computer. Some users may need to perform an additional step and reset their Domain Name Server (DNS) cache as it may be retaining the older IP addresses for mail.ucla.edu.

  • To reset the DNS cache on a Windows-based PC
    1. Click the Windows Start button
    2. Select Run
    3. Type the following command: ipconfig /flushdns

  • To reset the DNS cache on a OS X-based Macintosh
    1. Open a Terminal window
    2. Type the following command: sudo lookupd -flushcache
    3. You may be asked to enter your computer's administrator password

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions please contact the BOL Help Desk at (310)267-4357, option 1, or at consult@ucla.edu.
