08/15/2005: Safari Unsupported with BOL Proxy Server

Safari 2, released with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), cannot be used with the Bruin OnLine proxy server. Users attempting to use the proxy server to access restricted resources with Safari 2, such as library content, will be unable to connect. This is due to a bug in how Safari connects to proxy server. The failure can manifest itself in one of two ways:

  • the browser repeatedly asks a user to authenticate when trying to view a proxied site.
  • the browser will not ask for proxy authentication and refuse connection to the site.

This bug also causes an overload condition that can affect users of other browsers, such as Firefox and Mozilla. Apple has been made aware of this issue and once the problem has been fixed, we will post a follow-up announcement. In the meantime, users should use an alternate browser, such as Firefox, to view proxied sites. Users experiencing connection problems with Firefox may need to force reload the automatic proxy configuration file. This can be done by selecting Preferences from the Firefox menu. Choose General and click on the Connection Settings... button under Connection. Verify that you have http://proxy.ucla.edu/cgi/proxy in the Automatic proxy configuration URL box and that its radio button is checked. Click on Reload. You should now be able to access proxied sites.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions please contact the BOL Help Desk at (310)267-4357, option 1, or at consult@ucla.edu.
