12/03/2003: Campus Mail Gateway Spam and Virus protection
Effective December 6, 2003 SpamAssassin and Sophos AntiVirus Interface (SAVI) software will be implemented on the Campus Mail Gateway (smtp.ucla.edu) to evaluate incoming and outgoing email for spam and for known viruses.
SpamAssassin provides a mail filter that uses an array of heuristics to identify spam. Using this software, email is tagged as potential spam via the addition of an extra header. You will then be able to filter email based on this header, and decide what your mail client is to do with mail tagged as spam (delete, move to spam folder, put in trash, etc.). For detailed information about SpamAssassin, go to:
Virus management software utilizing Sophos AntiVirus Interface (SAVI) software will evaluate email using smtp.ucla.edu. If an email containing known viruses is sent to you, you will receive a notification message from vscan@ucla.edu informing you of the infected message. You will be directed to a website in order to view a text version of the original message and any attachments. Infected messages will be retained on a quarantine server for seven (7) days.
