09/10/2003: UCLA VPN transition on 09/15/2003

Campus users currently receive authentication and encryption from the Cisco 5001 VPN platform, which is accessed via vpn.ucla.edu. The 5001 VPN is an interim platform intended to provide VPN access until the long-term solution for VPN services is fully functional and all end-user devices are able to utilize the new platform. The long-term production VPN platform will utilize Cisco 3030 VPN concentrators, which support PDA devices and provide for scalability to meet growing demand.

The 3030 VPN platform is scheduled to become available for general use on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 10:00AM. On September 15th, all VPN users will have to make a change, whether they decide to continue with the 5001 (name change and new root certificate) or move the 3030 (download a new VPN client).

When the 3030 VPN platform is operational, the client address for that platform will become vpn.ucla.edu, and the client address for the 5001 VPN platform will become legacy.vpn.ucla.edu. Though the client address for the new 3030 VPN platform will be the same as the current address on the 5001, the client itself will be different.

Existing VPN users will have two choices:

  • If you want to move to the 3030 VPN platform, you must uninstall the 5001-related client on your end-user device and then download the new 3030 VPN client and install it on your device. The client and instructions are available at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/
  • If you need to stay on the 5001 VPN platform during the transition phase, on September 15 you must change the name of the client address from vpn.ucla.edu to legacy.vpn.ucla.edu. You must also download the new root certificate that will be available at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/legacy/. That will allow you to continue to use the current 5001 client for a period of time. You will be notified when the 5001 platform is scheduled to be decommissioned. Currently the tentative plan is to continue availability of the 5001 at least until the end of December 2003.
