09/17/2002: BOL Email Loss
At 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, one of the Bruin OnLine (BOL) POP email servers experienced a malfunction, which resulted in a loss of email for approximately 6,000 users, or 9% of all BOL accounts.
BOL does not maintain backups of email content. BOL is designed to support POP email, in which email is temporarily stored on the server until it is downloaded for permanent storage on the users work or personal computer.
BOL customers who store email on their local machine will experience a minimal impact, losing only email from the last time they checked until the time of the malfunction at 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Customers who maintain email on the server, or who have not checked their email for some time, will lose all email stored on the server up to the time of the malfunction.
To give users a sense of the email they may have lost, CTS will provide email logs for the affected accounts by end of business on Monday, September 23, 2002. The email logs will cover 72 hours prior to the malfunction, and will include from and date information so that users can determine the emails they received, and those they need to follow up on by notifying the sender. As noted above, the actual email content will not be available.
We apologize for this inconvenience. If you have additional questions or need assistance with your email settings, please call the BOL Help Desk at (310) 825-7452, option 1, or send an e-mail to consult@ucla.edu.
