12/12/2001: Wireless Ethernet Pilot Information
UCLA Communications Technology Services (CTS) is currently recruiting student, faculty, and staff participants for a pilot test of the new campus wireless network. The test, which begins on November 28, 2001, and ends on March 22, 2002, will evaluate wireless data network viability, usage patterns, support options, and campus demand. The results of this test will enable the eventual deployment of a campus-wide wireless Ethernet (802.11b) network to augment the UCLA wired network. CTS is coordinating the pilot test in collaboration with the Campus Wireless Project Team, which includes advisors from various UCLA departments and groups.
The coverage area consists of selected common areas in North Campus, including the Northern Lights food facility, the Murphy Sculpture Garden adjacent to the Young Research Library (YRL), and the 1st and 3rd floors of YRL.
To participate, you must be a UCLA student, faculty, or staff member; have a personal Bruin OnLine (BOL) account; have a laptop that runs Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Macintosh OS 9.x; an 802.11b compliant network interface card; and plan to use the wireless network from within the coverage area at least 2-3 times per week.
