06/08/2000: Ben2 Domain Will Stop Working 7/10/2000

As of Friday, July 10th, 2000, references to ben2.ucla.edu will cease to work and will need to be replaced by bol.ucla.edu. The date has been extended from June 30th to allow extra time for campus-wide migration from the Ben2 domain to the bol domain.

What does this mean to me?

The names that are used to refer to computers on the Internet (known as domain names) have been changed for several Bruin OnLine servers. The machines themselves have not changed. Currently, both the "ben2" and the "bol" naming structures are active and equivalent, so either one will work. However, the "ben2" domain names will cease to function on July 10, 2000.

If you have Internet software that currently uses or makes reference to "ben2", you must update this to reflect the correct domain name. As of 07/10/2000, any references to the "ben2" naming structure will not reach their intended destination.

The following is a list of the old "ben2" domain names along with their correct equivalent replacement names:

old domain name new domain name
--------------- --------------
smtp.ben2.ucla.edu smtp.bol.ucla.edu [1]
pop.ben2.ucla.edu pop.bol.ucla.edu [2]

www.ben2.ucla.edu www.bol.ucla.edu
www-ftp.ben2.ucla.edu www.bol.ucla.edu

ben2.ucla.edu bol.ucla.edu

NOTE:
[1] also valid is smtp.ucla.edu
[2] also valid is pop.ucla.edu

You can find instructions on how to do this from our webpage: http://www.bol.ucla.edu/software/ben2/

If you have any questions on how to accomplish this, please call the Bruin OnLine Help Desk at (310) 825-7452, Option 1, and a consultant will be able to help verify that you have the correct configuration. You may also email consult@ucla.edu to obtain assistance via email.
